Biomechanics of Dance with Margaret Wilson

For Associate Professor Margaret Wilson, Department of Theatre and Dance, balance is essential to correct form, and correct form in movement is essential to reduce injury to dancers. “Throughout my career as a dancer and teacher, I have had many questions about how to most effectively minimize injury while at the same time optimize performance,” she explains. “Looking at movement analytically helped me understand how best to teach and coach movement.” Professor Wilson discusses her use of biomechanics to understand the “grande rond de jambe en l’air” upright and while suspended upside down. The video takes us to the biomechanics lab of Boyi Dai and the dance studios of UW.
