Image Processing

GIMP GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X. Open Source.

ImageJ ImageJ is a public domain Java image processing program inspired by NIH Image for the Macintosh. It runs, either as an online applet or as a downloadable application, on any computer with a Java 1.1 or later virtual machine. Downloadable distributions are available for Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X and Linux. It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and "raw". It supports "stacks", a series of images that share a single window. It is multithreaded, so time-consuming operations such as image file reading can be performed in parallel with other operations. It can calculate area and pixel value statistics of user-defined selections. It can measure distances and angles. It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering. Open Source.

Imaris Combining speed, precision and ease-of-use, Imaris® provides a complete set of features for working with three-dimensional multi-channel images. Conveniently load, process and visualize images in any widely accepted image format to gain new insight from your microscopic data. And communicate your results convincingly with advanced movie generator and image export features. No other software gives you so much control at so many levels. The Imaris interface has been carefully designed for scientists who want to spend their time doing research, not mastering their imaging software. Its Surpass view, which is a Bitplane innovation, quickly enables visuals and data to be closely linked. In combination with Imaris MeasurementPro this provides an impressive range of statistical features that can be measured. Imaris exploits the latest hardware technology to put new capabilities at your fingertips.

Simpleware ScanIP Simpleware is the world leader in the conversion of 3D images (as obtained from MRI, CT, Micro-CT for example) into high quality Finite Element, CAD and Rapid Prototyping models. ScanIP offers an extensive selection of image processing tools for visualizing, segmenting and manipulating regions of interest. Segmented images can be exported as STL files for CAD analysis, RP manufacturing or, with the ScanFE module, imported directly into leading commercial Finite Element packages.

VIC-2D and VIC-3D VIC-2D and VIC-3D are commercial software packages for measuring surface deformations and strains using Digital Image Correlation. The software processes digital images to provide full-field deformation and strain maps over the entire surface of a material. VIC-2D is used for planar samples in tension/compression. VIC-3D is used for samples of any shape/size for full 3D deformation and strain measurements. Data can also be used for FEA validation. Free evaluation edition available for download.

Dynamic Analysis

AnyBody Technology modeling the mechanics of the human body The AnyBody Modeling System is a software system for dynamic analysis of human movement. It can model smaller or larger subsets of the musculo-skeletal system (or the entire body) and compute muscle forces, joint reactions, metabolism, mechanical work, efficiency, etc. for given movements.

DynaMechs DynaMechs supports dynamic simulation of a large class of articulated mechanisms; from simple serial chains to tree-structured articulated mechanisms to systems with closed loops. The library was implemented in object oriented, cross-platform C . Open source.

Lumo MotionVIZ Lumo MotionVIZ is a unique software component that renders a 3D articulated human skeleton with 50 segments. It renders many kinds of data for each body segment, e.g.: force, centre-of-mass (CoM), acceleration, motion trails, etc. Free evaluation edition available for download.

SD/FAST SD/FAST provides physically-based simulation of mechanical systems by taking a short description of an articulated system of rigid bodies (bodies connected by joints) and deriving the full nonlinear equations of motion for that system in C or Fortran source code.
